Chevy Alternator backwards? | The H.A.M.B.
It is pretty common for the Corvair people to use a stock 1 wire with the reversed fan. So if you can get a Corvair Alternator fan from Clark's Corvair or Corvair Underground, you'll be golden. Or if you are real lucky, you can find a 66-9 ( IIRC) Corvair in junkyard and pull one from it. CShroom, May 4, 2009.. An alternator will charge spinning backward. The brushes will sometimes squeak and wear at an odd angle, especially if the alternator has been used in the correct direction previously. The output is less because the output is inverse to the internal temperature. Since the fans are centrifugal, they work, but less efficiently in the backward.

Check your battery ground and your alternator ground Why computer has no light? If it is otherwise running, you have probably hooked the leads backwards. The panel lights on computers are light. Hooking it up backwards can damage your alternator, wiring harnesses and fuse links. (Fuse link damage is a nightmare to sort out!) What you do by hooking up a battery backwards is turn your vehicle wiring harness into a giant heating element. (<-Very bad!) If you just changed the battery and then you hooked up the cables with the smoking cable.

DON'T turn the pump as it's spinning backwards. You might actually break it if you do so. Now, I hope to come on here and talk to you guys again real, real soon… more on these topics. I love boat impellers. I love boats. And I love maintaining both, as well as getting a fresh whiff of ocean or river air with my best buds. The frequency is proportional to alternator speed. When the alternator is spinning 3600 rpm you will get 60 cycles per second on each leg, so you would need to control engine speed carefully for.

Between two alternators, an alternator that spins freely immediately it is spun and that which does not even when great strength is applied, one of these alternators should be put out of use as it no longer functions properly. That which is hard to spin is the defective one and should be replaced. If the housing on the starter is turned 180°, the magnets are flipped from the brushes and it WILL spin backwards! I pulled it back off the machine, rotated my cover 180° and whala, it was spinning correctly.. and has been since. Hopefully if anyone stumbles on this, try to do this before chucking the starter and getting a new one. tater4208. Most external fan, old style 'draw through', alternators can be run backwards as is, although if they have a directional fan (usually clockwise) it would be better to fit a 'reverse rotation' fan. Some are even factory uni-directional with straight fan blades. The problem is with modern internal fan alternators.

Re: alternator spin backwards? in reply to RMD, 07-26-2004 20:38:17 It is turning the right way, that is the way the hand crank turns, the same way driveshafts turn, too. But techically it doesn't care, one that is working is waving a magnetic field past a pile of coils without regard to direction. Test the voltage on the battery terminals with the motor going for the alternator. If the voltage drops below 12.9-13 volts at idle, it may be a sign of a problem with the alternator. Before you have your mechanic replacing the alternator, have him try it out with a digital voltmeter and a fully charged battery.

3) Connect a light gauge wire (+14 gauge) or a single jumper cables to the POSITIVE battery post. 4) Briefly touch the "F" (field) terminal on the generator with the wire; there will be a small spark. 5) Connect up the wires to the generator. 6) Connect up the battery cable. 7) Polarize the generator. Stop the alternator from rotating and then try to spin the pulley over the alternator. If it is okay it will freely spin one way and it won’t move backwards. Why do alternators have a clutch pulley? Overrunning alternator pulley or OAP simply works as a one way clutch mechanism that has been incorporated into the alternative pulley. Description. Will an alternator work spinning in reverse? Check the large power cable to the alternator and the fuse, usually, a large 40-60 amp fuse near the battery. Check the ground cable between the engine and the body. Check the serpentine belt and make sure the alternator is spinning with the engine. Check the small power supply wire and the charging light wire. The only caveat is that it is best to replace the brushes if using a used alternator. The brushes take a set as they wear in and don't make proper contact when reversed. The problem is that they still make contact but only in a small area leading to possible arcing. They also do make cooling fans for either rotation. Put one tip of the rubber hosiery in the alternator's receptacle, and put the other tip closer to your ear. This rubber hosiery operates like a doctor's sphygmomanometer. If the yelping or grinding is too loud when you hear through the hosiery, then you might have a comportment letdown starting in the alternator. So, it is better if you replace it.
SOLVED: I hooked the battery post up backwards an it - Fixya.
An alternator will generate current in either direction. But what can hinder this is the alternator fan function. The alternator cooling fan is designed to pull air into the back of the alternator to cool the diodes/heat sink located there, then the air is exhausted out the front. Spinning the fan backwards will pull air (less efficiently) in. Is there any reason a marine alternator with built in electronic regulator cannot be run in the opposite direction it's designed for IF proper cooling is still available? I can see that spinning it backwards with the existing fan blades won't cool it, but other than that, I can't see how direction would matter. Thoughts?. Sometimes a customer calls about a motor that is “freewheeling” backwards or forwards when the drive is off. This happens if a fan is connected to a common plenum and is air is being sucked past it, causing the motor to rotate. This.

I'm going to install a serpentine belt system on the small-block Chevy in my 1949 Ford. It appears that it will make the alternator spin backward. I've been told by some friends I need to buy a new.

Dave lewisMemberfrom Nampa ID. Alternators will charge turning either direction. The fan will normally pull warm air out of the case (clockwize, facing the engine) If you need to mount it backwards on the engine ( clearance issues??) it will work fine. The fan will blow cool air into the case. ( slightly less efficient, but ok.).

Will an alternator work spinning backward? Yes, your alternator will work perfectly if it spins in the opposite direction. The rectifier bridge in the engine directs the current in the right direction depending on the cycle thereby changing it to direct current (DC) in the process.
Alternating Opinions: We Answer Common Charging Questions.
I'll take guess. I think it will work because an alternator produces alternating current. It shouldn't matter which way it spins. Internally the current changes direction at a frequency determined by engine rpm and the number of poles. The diodes are what turn the ac into dc. And alternators don't have magnets. The cooling fan may be an issue. And pushing or pulling air through something to cool it may have different effects due to things like cavitation and turbulence. If you do run your alt backwards I would just run a flow test as FABRICATOR mentioned to insure air is.
